Contract talks have stalled and interest is growing, but Napoli may refuse to sell before the summer
Napoli face a growing fight to keep Scott McTominay, with talks over a new contract for the Scottish midfielder at a standstill and Real Madrid reported to have made an enquiry.
According to Tuttomercatoweb, the two parties have yet to reach agreement on a renewal, and the stalemate has started to draw interest from some of Europe’s biggest clubs.
Real Madrid are said to have contacted McTominay’s representatives to understand his situation. Further approaches could come from the Premier League, particularly if the deadlock with Napoli continues.
Il Mattino, cited in the report, warned that the risk of his exit being brought forward could be real. Without progress on a new deal, the prospect of the two sides parting ways may become increasingly concrete.
That would be a serious problem for Napoli. McTominay is regarded as one of the key figures in the squad, and losing him in the middle of the season would leave a gap the club would struggle to fill.
Time, in other words, is starting to work against them.
If no renewal is agreed in the coming months, sporting director Giovanni Manna could take a firm line and refuse any sale in the January window. That stance may also come at the request of Massimiliano Allegri.
A winter veto would allow Napoli to keep McTominay until at least the end of the season, pushing any decision on his future back to next summer. It would also buy the club several more months to try to reach terms with his agents and unlock the renewal.
For now, the priority in Naples is clear. Napoli want to stop interest from Madrid and the Premier League turning uncertainty over his contract into a concrete move for him as early as January.
